Your financial life should not feel overwhelming or incomprehensibly complex. Instead, it can empower you to follow your dreams. We help you establish a system that works for you, so that you can focus on things that matter.
Contessa Capital Advisors LLC works primarily with single and divorced women and solo moms.
We believe in empathetic, ethical collaboration, with no jargon or judgement.
We also believe that getting your financial life in order can give you confidence, resilience, and the flexibility to deal with life's ups and downs.
Contessa Capital Advisors offers independent, fee-only financial advice. This means we get paid only by you, the client, and never for selling you specific products or referring you to other providers.
You are unique. Your particular situation, your personal goals, your risk tolerance and risk capacity are all important considerations. Each bucket of money gets assigned a job related to your objectives and time horizon.
We can't control the markets or the economy, but we can control costs and we can control complexity. To this end, we focus on investments with low expense ratios, keep buying and selling to a minimum, and pay attention to tax impact.
One of the best things about having a financial plan is not that it shields you from uncertainty or market volatility, but rather that it serves as a reminder that when it comes to investing, time is your friend (stick to the plan) and emotions are your enemy (don't panic). The plan keeps you on your path when market booms and busts become tempting invitations to behave reactively.
The biggest components of investment returns are time, asset allocation, and costs. But it also makes sense to be aware of taxes when making asset location decisions (allocations between taxable, tax deferred and tax free accounts). Timing of equity sales (including equity compensation) can also impact taxes and is an important consideration.
The initial discussion is for discovering what you are looking to get out of our relationship and whether we are a good fit. You can ask questions about the process and/or highlight any urgent priorities.
Gather relevant documents like account statements, employee benefit plans, insurance policies, mortgage and other debt summaries, estate plan, tax returns, and divorce agreements. We use this information to build a detailed snapshot of your net worth, and to generate an initial action plan for addressing immediate concerns.
Don't worry: it might feel a little tedious at first but it doesn't have to be painful. Being aware of your cash inflows and cash outflows helps us identify how much to save, how to allocate investments, and how to plan for big goals.
When examined together, your personal balance sheet, cash flow statement, and review of your tax returns and other documents give us the building blocks for the deeper work of identifying opportunities, outlining next steps and designing the guiding principles of your plan.
We work together on the Action Plan, step by step. Typical areas of focus include Asset Allocation and Investment Management, Tax Mitigation, Maximizing the Impact of Charitable Giving, College Tuition, Real Estate Decisions, Estate Planning, Insurance Review, Debt Repayment, Equity Compensation, Financial Independence.
Going it alone can feel powerful and liberating and also, well, lonely sometimes. Managing your finances isn't just about dollars and cents. It's about clarity and priorities and life satisfaction. We want to partner with you to achieve these things together.
Nope. :-) But since we do charge fees, it helps to be committed to adopting good long term money habits including budgeting, saving, and investing.
There are two ways you can engage our services. The 12-month Financial Fitness Program entails an upfront amount plus monthly charge with a 1 year commitment. The total cost varies by complexity of your situation, but the minimum is usually $5,000. Our Comprehensive Program is payable quarterly and renewable annually, and includes investment management; fees are based on a percentage of investable assets.
We believe in the power of regularly reviewing your overall financial situation and articulating your money values. But if you really want to skip that part, we are happy to focus on your investments.
Financial Plans are neither a guarantee of future wealth nor a promise of future investment returns. But they are a useful way to identify gaps in your financial framework, articulate goals, and establish behavioral resolutions.
